Because it's basic maintenance, it'll give your regular mechanic a chance to inspect the car for other issues while he's changing out the oil. This can help you avoid any annoying breakdowns and large bills later as a result of that breakdown.
Another thing that your regular auto repair shop should do for you is exhaust work. The exhaust system is one of the most important parts of your car. It helps to keep the car running quietly. If you have damage to your muffler, not only could you get a ticket for your car running too loudly, you could have other exhaust problems. Your regular mechanic should be able to inspect and to repair any of these problems so that you don't have to worry about it. You shouldn't have to go to a "specialist" for this routine job.
Finally if your auto repair shop doesn't do brakes, then you really do need to find someone else. This is the second most common routine maintenance your car will need.
